“We should preserve every scrap of biodiversity as priceless while we learn to use it and come to understand what it means to humanity.” – E. O. Wilson
Biodiversity is the totality and variety of life on Earth. It includes genetic diversity within
species, the variety among species, and the range of ecosystems within which life
exists and interacts.
There are many reasons for biodiversity is good for the environment higher the variety
of crops, better response to natural disasters. It helps in the betterment of both humans
and the whole of the ecosystems. But due to carless usage of fuels and over
exploitation of natural resources the biodiversity is getting affected.
We all are either directly or indirectly dependent on biodiversity for many things.
functioning ecosystems that supply oxygen, clean air and water, pollination of plants is
just a few
Loss of biodiversity will impact humans if ecosystem services are no longer adequate to
meet social needs. Thus, changes in ecosystem services affect livelihoods, income,
local migration etc.
To add, biological diversity of microorganisms, flora and fauna benefits the biological,
health, and pharmacological sciences. It play an important role in medical and
pharmacological discoveries. Biodiversity loss may limit discovery of treatments for
many diseases and health problems.
There are many ways to prevent this depletion:
Government legislation-
Governments controls the habitats within their country. Legislation that protects natural habitats by outlawing development, harvesting of natural resources, or other human exploitation has a huge impact on maintaining natural biodiversity. Thus, rules and laws with penalty should be made stricter on those who exploit natural resources.
Education-
Education is one of the keys to success. Educating people about the importance of biodiversity conservation increases public awareness of the issue. As public awareness increases people become more involved and eventually influence their government representatives, pushing for more environmental protection.
Sustainable living-
Sustainable living is something that we can each choose to do daily. It can be through
taking shorter showers or buying Eco labeled products it helps reduce the amount of
resources we use. This has been shown to be a promising way of returning biodiversity to a region.
We are the only ones who can preserve our nature for the future. So, lets take a small
step to pace ourselves on conserving biodiversity. Together we can make a difference
